As the second most populous county in the state, Middlesex County is home to 860,147 residents and is distinguished by its rapidly growing Asian Indian population. The county seat, New Brunswick, serves as a hub for cultural activities, sciences, and the arts. The Middlesex County court system comprises Superior Courts, Surrogate's Courts, and Municipal Courts. The superior court in New Brunswick is divided into two courthouses. The surrogate's court operates a main office and 11 satellite offices. Additionally, each of the 25 municipalities in Middlesex County is home to a municipal court.

Through its several divisions, the Superior Court in Middlesex County handles the county's legal matters. Its Criminal Division handles all criminal cases, while the Civil Division deals with complex litigation and small claims. The Family Division is responsible for handling juvenile delinquency, adoption, and other family-related matters. The Chancery Division hears contested probate matters and foreclosure actions. Furthermore, Municipal Courts are responsible for addressing all disorderly person offenses, DWI cases, and violations of fish and game regulations. Lastly, the Surrogate's Court handles uncontested probate matters that involve a valid will and no disputes between the executor and the beneficiaries.

Each court year, the Middlesex County Superior Court receives between 40,000 and 60,000 filed cases and provides probation services to approximately 5,000 clients to rehabilitate offenders and reduce incarceration costs. Based on uniform crime reports, Middlesex County's index crime rate per 100,000 population in 2018 was 1,308.7, 1,259 in 2019, and 1,060.7 in 2020. The court records of cases filed with the superior court are maintained by the Clerk of the Superior Court while the Records Department provides the Surrogate's Court records upon request. It is worth noting that certain records containing confidential information, such as adoption, child abuse, juvenile delinquency, and domestic violence records, cannot be provided by custodians of court records. To access publicly available records, interested parties can either subscribe to the New Jersey Electronic Access Program (EAP) or complete and submit a court records request form through the Judiciary Electronic Document Submission platform.

The Middlesex County court system attends to the legal needs of people who enter the county's justice system. The majority of filed cases are resolved in the superior court. This court is divided into specialized divisions that handle cases within their jurisdiction. The surrogate's court handles uncontested probate cases, while the municipal courts have jurisdiction over minor offenses within their municipalities.
