Yuma County, Arizona
Located in the southwestern corner of the state of Arizona, Yuma County has the highest Hispanic population in the state. The county has a land area of 5,513.8 square miles and a population of over 204,300 people. Its county seat is Yuma City. The Yuma County court system consists of the Superior Court, Justice Courts, and Municipal Courts.
The Yuma County Superior Court is a court of general jurisdiction. Its authority covers all cases that are beyond the authority of other courts in the county. Matters within the jurisdiction of the Superior Court include civil claims exceeding $10,000 in value, real estate matters, cases of divorce and nullity, juvenile matters, and probate cases. The court also hears felony cases, to the exclusion of other courts in the county. The Justice Courts in Yuma County have jurisdiction over misdemeanors, traffic cases, and civil claims of less than $10,000. They also handle small claims involving $3,500 or less. The lowest courts in the Yuma County court system are the Municipal Courts. They have jurisdiction over petty offenses, municipal ordinance violations, and misdemeanors. Cities and towns with Municipal Courts include San Luis, Yuma, and Wellton.
According to reports by the Yuma County Sheriff's Office, Yuma County had a crime rate of over 2,500 incidents per 100,000 people in 2023. Likewise, during the 2022 fiscal year, the Yuma County Superior Court concluded 5,265 cases.
