About/Additional Info: The Clarinda Correctional Facility (CCF) was established in 1980 as an adult male medium security prison to serve primarily general population offenders who have no identified issues, chemically dependent offenders, intellectually disabled offenders, and mentally ill offenders and/or those diagnosed with special needs. CCF embraces the mission of the Department of Corrections, “Creating Opportunities for Safer Communities.” We want those who serve their time in our facility to come out with skills and education to provide them more of an opportunity to succeed in the communities where they return. Educational Programs contracted through Iowa Western Community College are available at CCF. The Education programs offered include HiSET, Literacy, Life Skills, Digital Literacy, Microsoft Office, and Special Education Classes. CCF is using Achieving Change Through Value-Based Behavior (ACTV) treatment program. The program guides participants in behavior change using the principles of ACTV, and includes learning skills such as defining their own personal values, becoming aware of their emotions and thoughts, noticing the consequences of their behavior, and learning new ways to respond to emotions and thoughts. Also offered at CCF are opportunities through the Iowa Prison Industries. Offenders gain the daily skills and work experience of working at an industrial manufacturing plant producing cargo trailers. Employed offenders have the opportunity to participate in either the welding or mental fabricating apprenticeship program. This program involves approximately 6000 hours of on the job training and successfully completing 450 hours of classroom time. Graduating offenders receive certification and become a journeyman. CCF has added landscaping to the apprenticeship opportunities. A two-year landscaping apprenticeship takes roughly 2000 hours to complete. The program is a partnership between Iowa Western Community College and DOC that is registered with the Department of Labor. The new bee program is a vital part of the landscaping apprenticeship program. CCF has a dog program for offenders and researching a material handling apprenticeship. Offenders that qualify to participate in the dog program are assigned a dog that they work and train the dog with the goal of preparing the dog for adoption. Other work opportunities for offenders to participate include dietary, maintenance, grounds, warehouse, and facility sanitation. Our goal at Clarinda Correctional Facility is to prepare offenders to move forward while being incarcerated, and prepare each offender for successful reentry into their community upon release.
