Genesee County is located in the State of Michigan. It has an estimated population of 405,200 individuals, making it the fifth-most populous county in the state. The largest city in the county, Flint, is recognized as the government seat. Genesee County's court system is structured to handle criminal cases, civil actions, and probate issues, among other legal matters. The Courts in the county include the Circuit Court, the 67th District Court, and the Genesee County Probate Court.

The 7th Judicial Circuit Court, located in Flint, serves Genesee County as a court of general jurisdiction. The court is divided into the Civil-Criminal Division and the Family Division. While the Family Division handles domestic relations matters and juvenile cases involving minors, the Civil-Criminal Division hears civil and criminal cases. Civil actions at the Circuit Court involve injunctive or equitable relief cases and non-criminal suits exceeding $25,000. However, the court's criminal jurisdiction is limited to felony cases. The 67th District Court for Genesee County hears civil cases under $25,000, landlord/tenant matters, personal property, land contract disputes, and small claims cases up to $6,500. Within the District Court, the Criminal Court Division conducts arraignments, felony preliminary examinations, and issues arrest or search warrants. Other cases under the District Court's jurisdiction include traffic violations and civil infractions concerning municipal ordinance violations. District Court branches in the county are Flushing, Davison, Burton, Mt. Morris, Fenton, Grand Blanc, and Flint. Lastly, the Genesee County Probate Court adjudicates matters related to estates of deceased persons, wills and trusts, guardianships, conservatorships, and mental health commitments.

In 2022, there were a total of 7,613 index crimes reported in Genesee County. Per the 2023 Caseload Reports for Genesee County, the 7th Circuit Court handled approximately 17,000 cases, encompassing civil, criminal, domestic relations, and juvenile matters. The Circuit Court also finalized an estimated 12,000 cases for this period. On the other hand, the 67th District Court for Genesee County handled approximately 12,500 cases in 2023, with a total of 11,000 dispositions. Lastly, the Genesee County Probate Court resolved 3,494 cases of the 3,814 cases it handled. Genesee County's Clerks of the Courts preserve court records and provide them online or in person at their offices. However, residents may require court orders to obtain confidential or sealed court information.
