Hudson County, New Jersey

The smallest and most densely populated county in New Jersey, Hudson County has a population of over 712,000 and lies west of the lower Hudson River. Its county seat is Jersey City, which is also its largest city. Superior Courts, Surrogate's Courts, and Municipal Courts make up the trial court system in Hudson County. Superior Courts typically address cases outside the purview of lesser courts, even though they have wide jurisdiction over all civil and criminal issues. Certain categories of criminal offenses are within the limited jurisdiction of Municipal Courts.

The Hudson County Court has two main levels: Superior and Municipal Courts. The Hudson County Superior Courts handle more serious cases and may have specialized Divisions for Civil, Criminal, Family, and Probate matters. Surrogates, who are both elected county officials and judicial officers, oversee the Surrogate's Court, which deals with wills and estates. They also serve as Deputy Clerks for specific Divisions within the Superior Court. The Hudson County Municipal Courts handle less serious matters, including traffic violations, minor offenses, and preliminary hearings for felonies. Unlike Superior Courts, Municipal Courts in the county cannot handle serious accidents, crimes punishable by more than a year in jail, or most motor vehicle cases involving death or injury.

The Hudson County court system handles more than 11,500 cases annually, offering important insights into the evolution of the county's legal system. With 1,617.9 crimes committed against every 100,000 residents, the county is a prime example of the advantages of having a strong judicial system. The Register in Hudson County is responsible for maintaining court records electronically. The Official Records Search Portal is available to the general public for access to these court records. The public can also access the county court records using the Find a Case platform maintained by the New Jersey Courts. Note that certain records of Criminal and Municipal Court proceedings, Family Part proceedings, and Guardianship proceedings are exempt from public access.

In summary, the Hudson County court system is a crucial facet of the county administration, committed to upholding justice in a range of judicial proceedings. The county's rich judicial system, comprising Superior Courts, Surrogate's Courts, and Municipal Courts, is capable of handling a broad variety of cases. The public's trust in the Hudson County judicial system has grown as a result of the adoption of an electronic system that guarantees accessibility and transparency while protecting court records.

Upon receiving an emergency 911 call, local jurisdictions are immediately alerted and the caller is connected to its first responder. Jersey City, Bayonne and Secaucus have 911 operations of their own but have relied on County 911 when their systems are inoperative. Many of the cell phone calls that they receive are from Jersey City Proper and Surrounding local and New York Area Municipalities placing an increased work load on the system & operators.
