Mohave County, Arizona

Mohave County is the fifth-largest county by area in the United States, with a total area of 13,461 square miles. It is located in the northwestern region of Arizona, and its county seat is Kingman. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county is home to 223,682 residents. Mohave County residents are served by a superior court, three municipal courts, and four justice courts, which make up the county's judicial government.

The Justice Courts in Mohave County are situated in Kingman, Lake Havasu, Bullhead, and Colorado cities. These courts have jurisdiction over traffic, civil, and criminal cases. They preside over civil lawsuits with a disputed amount not exceeding $10,000, small claims up to $3,500, evictions, and consumer complaints against businesses. Justice courts also hold hearings for all types of misdemeanors, including underage drinking, DUI, and bad checks. The Superior Court is the county's court of general jurisdiction that hears felonies, misdemeanors, equity, probate, and divorce cases. The Mohave County Superior Court has its locations in Bullhead, Kingman, and Lake Havasu. Municipal Courts have jurisdiction over certain legal matters within their city limits. They handle petty, misdemeanor criminal traffic, and civil traffic offenses. Municipal courts can issue search warrants, orders of protection, and injunctions against harassment. It is worth noting that the Municipal Court and Justice Court in Lake Havasu City are consolidated and share the same location.

Mohave County courts process nearly 70,000 cases on an annual basis. On average, the Mohave Superior Court administers 7,000 cases, with at least 1,400 felony cases each year. On the other hand, Justice Courts receive the most cases in Mohave County. Yearly, they process close to 35,000 cases, the majority of which are civil traffic and total felony cases. Municipal Courts receive more civil traffic and other misdemeanor case filings than other cases and process approximately 19,000 cases annually. Mohave County residents have access to the public court records maintained by the Clerk of Superior Court and can obtain them by completing a Record Request Form or calling the clerk's office. In addition, the Public Access Case Lookup portal allows users to access records remotely. However, the public cannot access mental health, probate, or certain juvenile records.

The Mohave County court system consists of Municipal, Superior, and Justice Courts. These courts strive to deliver justice by handling all cases filed within the county. The court system also promotes transparency by providing easy and convenient access to court records, both remotely and through the clerk's office.

About / Additional Info: The Kingman Municipal Court is located in a building constructed in 1896 and formerly known as The Little Red School House where grades 1st - 8th attended school until 1928. In 1974, the building was placed on the Register of Historic Buildings. In 1992, decided to renovate the building and it has been home to the Municipal Court since.
