Sussex County, New Jersey
Sussex County is located in the most northwestern part of the state New Jersey, and its county seat is the Town of Newton. Named after Sussex in England, it was established in the year 1753 from portions of Morris County. Being part of the New York Metropolitan area it is also part of New Jersey's Skyland Region. Sussex County is the 17th most populous in the state and it has an estimated population of 144,808 people and a land area of 518.5 square miles. The county is home to a Superior Court, Surrogate's Court, and several Municipal Courts.
Residents of Sussex are served by the Morris-Sussex Superior Court. The court hears its cases at the Sussex Judicial Center in Newton Town. The court has jurisdiction over all criminal and civil cases. It also hears family, domestic relations, and juvenile cases. Sussex County Surrogate's Court handles cases relating to probate of wills, trusts, guardianships, mental health, and adoptions. Meanwhile, the multiple Municipal Courts, such as those located in Newton, Sparta, and Franklin, handle motor vehicle cases, local ordinance violations, preliminary hearings, and domestic violence matters.
According to the 2020 Uniform Crime Reporting, Sussex County has a crime rate of 413.8 incidents per 100,000 people. Also, between 2021 and 2022, courts in Sussex County resolved a total of 7,023 cases, according to the Annual Report of the New Jersey Courts. Interested residents can search most court records on the Superior Court's Portals or through the Electronic Access Program Portal. Researchers can also obtain copies of Sussex Court records by submitting a completed records form to the Superior Court Clerk's Office. However, note that state and federal laws restrict access to confidential records such as records of juvenile cases and documents containing trade secrets. Additionally, matters having to do with mental health and medical records are typically kept confidential as well. To gain access to such records, special permission from authorized personnel or a court order is required. All information on how to handle this can be given at an in-person visit to the County Clerk's Office.
In summary, the Superior Court, Surrogate's Court, and Municipal Courts of Sussex County play a crucial role in the smooth running of the county. They determine the legal rights and obligations of residents, thus preventing people from resorting to self-help. The court's practice of ensuring public access to court records also promotes transparency and accountability in the adjudication of cases.
