Lea County, New Mexico
Lea County is located both north and west of the state line of Texas which puts it in the southeastern corner of New Mexico. Additionally, it was established in 1917 and named in honor of Captain Joseph Calloway Lea. The county occupies a land area of 4,391 square miles and is home to over 73,100 residents. Its government seat is Lovington City and its largest city is Hobbs. Part of the 2nd Congressional District, residents of Lea County are served by a District Court, a Magistrate Court, a Probate Court, and Municipal Courts.
The Lea County District Court is a trial court of general jurisdiction with the authority to hear several cases, including contract disputes, torts, estates, domestic relations cases, mental health proceedings, and appeals of administrative hearings. It also adjudicates juvenile matters and contested probate cases to the exclusion of other courts in the county. The Magistrate Court is a court of limited jurisdiction. It handles felony preliminary hearings, misdemeanor offenses, driving while intoxicated (DWI), and civil actions involving up to $10,000. Other cases within the court's authority include landlord-tenant disputes, torts, and traffic violations. The Probate Court specializes in informal probate cases and uncontested estate matters. The Municipal Courts handle municipal ordinance violations, petty misdemeanors, and traffic offenses. Cities with Municipal Courts include Eunice, Hobbs, Jal, Lovington, and Tatum.
