The Santa Fe County Magistrate Courts in Pojoaque and Santa Fe hear misdemeanors, civil cases with claims under $10,000, and preliminary hearings for felonies. They also handle municipal ordinance infractions and traffic offenses in areas outside the jurisdiction of Municipal Courts. The Santa Fe County Probate Court handles all probate matters, including admission of wills, appointment of guardianships, and management of estates. Municipal Courts in Edgewood and Santa Fe deal with municipal ordinance violations and traffic offenses.

Parking: While there are some parking meter spaces near the building, most parking is reserved. However, there is free parking available a block away from the building at a public parking garage across from the Roundhouse. The garage is located on the corner of Paseo de Peralta and Galisteo, and the following link provides a map showing where that parking garage is located and a walking route from the garage to the Supreme Court Building.
Directions: The Court is located at 237 Don Gaspar Avenue, Santa Fe, NM, alongside the Santa Fe River on the corner of Don Gaspar and Alameda. When you arrive at the Court, please enter through the large, double brass doors at the front of the building.
Public transportation: These Bus lines stop near New Mexico State Capitol: RT1, RT2, RT6.

About / Additional Info: The New Mexico Supreme Court has mandatory appellate jurisdiction over cases involving life sentence and death penalty appeals, Public Regulation Commission appeals, and appeals regarding election challenges. The court has discretionary appellate jurisdiction to grant writs of certiorari to review judgments of the New Mexico Court of Appeals, and it has superintending control over lower courts. When it was first created, the Court was comprised of three Justices. In 1929, the Court expanded to a Court of five. The first three Justices were the Honorable Clarence J. Roberts, Richard H. Hanna, and Frank W.Parker. The newly created fourth and fifth seats in 1929 were first held by the Honorable Charles C. Catron and John F. Simms. The five seats on the Supreme Court are now named after the Justices who first held them and are known as the Carton Seat, the Hanna Seat, the Parker Seat, the Roberts Seat, and the Simms Seat.

About / Additional Info: The Court of Appeals is the intermediate appellate court in the State of New Mexico. It sits between district courts and certain administrative agencies, which are below it, and the New Mexico Supreme Court, which is above it. Its jurisdiction covers the entire State. The Court of Appeals currently reviews appeals in all cases, except criminal cases involving sentences of death or life imprisonment, appeals from the Public Regulation Commission, and cases involving habeas corpus. The Court’s caseload is about 900 cases per year. The Court has two offices, one in Santa Fe and one in Albuquerque. At this time, three chambers are located in Santa Fe and seven chambers are located in Albuquerque. The Santa Fe office is in the Supreme Court building, and the Albuquerque office is located adjacent to the University of New Mexico School of Law.

Parking: You cannot park at any businesses or private residences. Most businesses and residential homeowners will tow your vehicle. The Court will not be responsible if your vehicle is towed. You cannot park at parking meters as you will not be able to leave to move your car when the meter expires. The Court will not pay or reimburse you for any parking tickets you receive. You can park in Railyard Garage (Enter at 503 Camino de la Familia (behind REI)), or in Sandoval Garage (Enter at 216 West San Francisco Street (across from Lensic)).
Directions: Directions from Railyard Garage: Proceed from the structure north and turn east (right) on Montezuma. Travel three blocks. The courthouse is on the north (left) side of the street. Fifteen (15) minutes to walk, plus ten (10) minutes to go through security. Directions from Sandoval Garage: Head south along Sandoval approximately four blocks, and turn left on Montezuma. Fifteen (15) Minutes, plus ten (10) minutes to go through security.
