The county was named for the island of Hawaii, which is most often called ‘the big island,' and the county seat is Hilo. Hawaii County is part of the 2nd Congressional District and handles justice claims via its court system, comprising three Circuit Courts, three District Courts, and three Family Courts.

Family Courts in Hawaii County are Divisions of the Circuit and District Courts. These courts hear cases of divorce, paternity, child support, guardianships of adults and children, and matters of domestic violence. They have exclusive jurisdiction over juvenile matters, child neglect, child custody, adoption, and termination of parental rights. The District Courts hold jury trials and have limited jurisdiction over some civil and criminal cases.
