Leflore County, Mississippi
Leflore County was established in 1871 in Mississippi. It was named after Greenwood LeFlore, a Choctaw leader. The county has about 27,900 residents and a land area of 594 square miles. The City of Greenwood serves as the government seat. There are six trial courts in Leflore County, including Circuit, Chancery, County, Youth, Justice, and Municipal Courts.
Leflore County's Circuit Court serves under the 4th Circuit Court District in Mississippi. The general jurisdiction court oversees legal matters beyond other lesser courts. Felony trials and civil claims exceeding $100,000 in financial disputes are exclusive to the Circuit Court. As a limited appellate court, the Circuit Court also hears appeals from County, Justice, Youth, and Municipal Courts. Leflore County has a Chancery Court tasked with resolving probate matters, guardianships, administration of deceased estates, and domestic relations issues. Legal proceedings involving property disputes are also within the purview of the Chancery Court in Leflore County. The County & Youth Court in Leflore also has exclusive jurisdiction over all juvenile cases. The County and Youth Court can also preside over petty misdemeanors and small claims cases. Petty crimes punishable by fines and small claims of no more than $3,500 in financial disputes are within the jurisdiction of the Leflore County Justice Court. Leflore has Municipal Courts in the cities of Greenwood and Itta Bena. Both courts handle ordinance violations and traffic crimes in their respective cities.
According to the Mississippi Supreme Court Annual Reports, the Circuit Court in Leflore County receives less than 100 case filings while resolving about 60% yearly. In 2023, 80 criminal cases were filed at the apex court, 19 cases were disposed of, and more than 2,000 remain pending. The Circuit Court Clerk in Leflore County maintains only court records filed in the Circuit and County courts. Conversely, the Chancery Clerk is the official custodian of land and probate records. The Justice and Municipal Courts also have designated Clerks tasked with keeping court records. Interested persons can contact relevant Court Clerks in Leflore County to obtain public court records. Court records in Leflore County are also available online via the Mississippi Electronic Courts (MEC) portal. Juvenile, adoption, sealed, and other confidential records containing sensitive information are not available to the public.
