San Juan County, Utah
San Juan County is the largest county in Utah, consisting of 7,933 square miles. The county was founded in 1880, but its county seat, Monticello, was created in 1887. There are approximately 14,524 residents that reside in San Juan County, and it borders Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona at the Four Corners. Part of the Seventh Judicial District of Utah, it serves San Juan residents, consisting of a District and a Juvenile Court. Additionally, Justice Courts serve the county by providing timely and fair justice within their territorial jurisdictions.
Statutorily authorized to handle a wide array of cases, the San Juan County District Court tries all criminal and civil cases, including family-related matters involving divorce, adoption, child custody, and child support. Matters of formal and informal probate, as well as disputes arising from the validation of a will, are also handled in this court. On the other hand, the Juvenile Court has exclusive jurisdiction in cases where children under 18 years violate federal, state, or municipal laws. It also hears juvenile traffic offenses and the abuse or neglect of children. Both Juvenile and District Courts in San Juan are located in Monticello. Furthermore, Justice Courts focus on class B and C misdemeanors, ordinance violations, small claim matters, and infractions committed within their municipalities. The San Juan Justice Court is also located in Monticello and Blanding.
The San Juan Justice Courts handle the highest number of cases annually, disposing of approximately 5,000 cases. The District Court handles about 800 cases, while the Juvenile Court administers an average of 90 cases a year. Moreover, San Juan court records are maintained in the courthouses where they were filed. Residents interested in viewing them may choose to use public access terminals provided in the District Courthouse at a fee or subscribe to Xchange, an online repository provided by the judicial branch of Utah. It is noteworthy that users do not have access to adoption, civil commitment, or juvenile-related records.
The San Juan County court system plays an essential role in resolving legal issues within the county. Although the District Court has broad jurisdiction over most cases, the majority of cases are heard in the Justice Courts. The Juvenile Court has sole jurisdiction over matters relating to juveniles. The records of cases filed in these courts are easily accessible by visiting courthouses or using the online resource provided by the state's judicial branch.
