Salt Lake County is the most populous county in Utah, with a population of over 1.18 million residents. It was founded in 1850 and named after the Great Salt Lake. Its land area covers 742 square miles. Salt Lake City is the state capital, county seat, and the largest city in the county. The Salt Lake County 3rd District Court in Salt Lake City and West Jordan is the highest court in the county with jurisdiction over all cases but typically hears cases outside the purview of the Justice Courts. Lastly, Justice Courts in Salt Lake County decide municipal ordinance violations, Class B and C misdemeanors, small claims, and traffic violations. There are Justice Courts in Draper City, Alta, Herriman, Bluffdale, Holladay, Murray, Midvale City, Riverton City, Sandy, South Jordan, South Salt Lake, Taylorsville, West Jordan, West Valley City, and Salt Lake City.

The Crime in Utah 2021 report revealed that Salt Lake County had over 15,000 crimes against persons, about 65,000 crimes against properties, and over 13,000 crimes against society in the year 2021. The crime rate in Salt Lake County was 7,946 per 100,000 residents. In 2023, the Salt Lake City branch of the District Court handled over 13,000 criminal cases, about 7,000 domestic relations cases, over 22,000 civil cases, and about 4,700 probate matters, while the West Jordan branch oversaw about 400 criminal cases, five domestic relations matters, about and 4,000 civil cases. Similarly, the Salt Lake County Juvenile Court handled over 20,000 juvenile matters in the same period. The various courts maintain their records in compliance with state and county regulations. Confidential court records containing sensitive and private information, such as juvenile records, medical and mental health records, and adoption records, are closed to the public.
