Juneau County, Wisconsin
Juneau County was created in 1857 and named after Milwaukee legislator Solomon Juneau. In the year 2022, the county had an estimated population of 26,695. Spanning a land area of 804 square miles the cities that create Juneau County include, Mauston, New Lisbon, Wonewoc, Elroy, Necedah, Lyndon Station, Union Center, Camp Douglas, Lemonweir, Finley, Hustler, Lindina, and Cutler. Its county seat is Mauston. Juneau County court system comprises the Circuit Court and the Municipal Courts. These courts oversee various legal matters, which are essential to upholding law and order in the county.Â
The Circuit Court is the highest trial court in the county. Located within the 7th Judicial District Justice Center, the court hears all civil cases, including contractual disputes, monetary claims, real estate cases, and torts. It also has jurisdiction over felony, misdemeanor, juvenile delinquency, juvenile dependency, and child abuse cases. Probate and family cases also fall within the jurisdiction of the Circuit Court. Juneau County is also home to Municipal Courts located in Elroy, New Lisbon, Union Center, and Wisconsin Dells. These courts hear traffic and non-traffic ordinance violations within their jurisdictions.
The Juneau County Circuit Court resolved over 871 criminal cases, 1,096 civil cases, 141 probate cases, and 89 juvenile cases in 2023. Likewise, the county's crime rate per 1,000 residents stands at approximately 35 incidents. Juneau County's juvenile, adoption, and guardianship records are not public, neither are any records having to do with mental health. A court order would be required to gain access to this information.
