San Francisco County, California

The City and County of San Francisco is the most populated County in California and the fifth most densely populated County in the US. Its 46.9 square miles of land is home to over 851,000 people while its water bodies cover 80% of its 231.89 square miles total area. San Francisco County was established in 1776 and incorporated in 1848. San Francisco County runs a unified court system, similar to all other counties in California. The county residents can receive equal and timely access to justice because of this unified system.

The San Francisco County Superior Court has branches in four areas within the city. It has general jurisdiction over all criminal and civil cases. It hears unlimited civil cases in addition to traffic, misdemeanor, criminal, family law, juvenile, probate, and mental health cases. The court is divided into Divisions based on case types, with one of the branches dedicated to juvenile matters.

With an average of 5,000 violent crimes and 45,000 nonviolent crimes, San Francisco County experiences about 50,000 crimes annually. The county's crime rate is about 6,185 crimes per 100,000 residents. The San Francisco County Superior Court handles over 50,000 cases annually. It hears about 12,000 civil cases and over 35,000 criminal cases. The court staff maintains the court records and makes nonconfidential records available to the public. Anyone can visit the courthouses to inspect and request copies of public court records. They can also use the public access terminals at the court premises to view court records. In addition, they can search online for case information from the San Francisco Superior Court. However, certain court records in San Francisco County are sealed under California law or by court orders to preserve privacy and protect sensitive information. These records, including adoption records, juvenile records, identifying information about jurors, medical and mental health records, records of victims of domestic abuse, and financial information, are not accessible to the public but can only be accessed by authorized persons or by court orders.

Parking: No parking is available in the building. Directly across the street from the Earl Warren Building and Courthouse is the Civic Center Plaza Garage at 355 McAllister Street. Current rates are $3.00/hour or $24.00 maximum/day. Other public lots and limited metered street parking are available in the Civic Center area.
Directions: By Public Transit From BART/Muni Metro: Exit the Civic Center station on the corner of Market and Hyde Streets, walk two blocks north on Hyde to McAllister, then turn left and walk one-and-one-half blocks west. The building entrance is on McAllister between Larkin and Polk Streets. OR exit the Civic Center station at Grove Street behind the Main Library and turn left, walking one block west to Larkin Street, then turn right and walk two blocks north to McAllister, then turn left and walk one-half block west. From Caltrain: Exit the Caltrain station (at Fourth and Townsend Streets) on Fourth Street. Turn right and walk half a block to King Street, where you can take the N-Judah or T-Third Muni Metro line to the Civic Center station. Exit the Civic Center station and follow one of the routes described above. From the Transbay Bus Terminal: Exit the terminal (on Mission Street between First and Fremont Streets) and walk northwest one block on Fremont to Market Street. Turn right onto Market and enter the Embarcadero BART/Muni station. Take BART or Muni to the Civic Center station. Exit the Civic Center station and follow one of the routes described above. Upon crossing Market Street, stay to your right and follow Larkin Street two blocks north to McAllister Street. Turn left on McAllister . Parking is on your left. The building will be on your right. From the East Bay: From the Bay Bridge, take the Ninth Street/Civic Center exit off Highway 80. At the end of the ramp, you will be on Harrison Street. Follow it one block west to Ninth Street and turn right. Follow Ninth Street five blocks north to Market Street. Upon crossing Market Street, stay to the right and follow Larkin Street two blocks north to McAllister Street. Turn left on McAllister. Parking is on your left. The building will be on your right. From the North Bay: From the Golden Gate Bridge, stay on Highway 101 and take the Lombard Street exit east to Van Ness Avenue, then turn right. Follow Van Ness south approximately 25 blocks to McAllister, and turn left. Follow McAllister one block. Parking is on your right. The building will be on your left.
