Placer County, California

The County of Placer was created on April 25, 1851, and stretches across 1,502 square miles. It was named after a Spanish word for sand or gravel deposits (placer mining) containing gold. Placer mining is an area at the center of the California Gold Rush. A population of 406,608 live in the county and its seat is Auburn. The Superior Court is the only court of jurisdiction in the county, it is however divided into several Divisions. It is a court of general and original jurisdiction. It serves several functions being the only court of resolution that the residents bring their juvenile, domestic relations, contract, trust, probate of wills, and all settlement cases.

The Superior court is divided into Civil, Criminal, Family, Juvenile, Traffic, and Probate Divisions. The Superior courts in Placer County are the Superior Court Tahoe Courthouse in Tahoe City, the Superior Court Juvenile Courthouse in Auburn, the Superior Court Jail Courtroom in Roseville, Historic Courthouse in Auburn, and Hon. Howard G. Gibson Courthouse, Justice Center Drive in Roseville. The following are the functions of the Divisions within the Superior Court:

  • Civil Division: A plaintiff petitions a judge to intervene in matters involving harassment, workplace violence, small claims, and eviction cases
  • Family Division: The judges in the family division solve family-related issues such as domestic abuse, child visitation, custody, and legal separation. They offer mediation services in order to support parents in child custody matters
  • Juvenile Division: All juvenile and justice proceedings involving the abuse of minors and crimes committed by persons under 18 are treated in this division
  • Probate Division: Guardianship and conservatorship cases as well as cases involving the distribution of wealth are matters of concern in the probate court. These cases are decided in the civil division
  • Traffic Division: Pleas for traffic citations are heard in this court. Also, this court handles traffic and non-traffic violation cases
  • Criminal Division: This court deals with misdemeanors

The 2023 court statistics report of the Judicial Council of California that was published, stated a total of 44,448 cases filed in Placer County in the fiscal year 2023. A total number of 49,202 cases were disposed that year. Court records are available on the Placer Superior Court's Online Services page or in the Hon. Howard G. Gibson Courthouse. The Clerk of Superior Court discharges its duties by responding to public requests. Juvenile Court records are not publicly available.

Placer County has established a portal through which parties involved in a case including attorneys and the public can view and download case documents. The general public, litigants, attorneys, and law enforcement officers can get reminders of upcoming court dates through hearing reminder services (HRS). Litigants can follow up on the progress of cases heard in the Superior Courts and appear online for remote hearings through a remote appearance system. In addition to this, traffic ticket payments can be paid online and electronic case files for existing cases can be viewed.
