Pueblo County, Colorado

Pueblo County is Colorado's 13th largest county by total area, with a total area of 2,398 square miles. Based on information given in 2022, the county had a population of 168,135. The city of Pueblo is the largest city and county seat. All legal matters filed in Pueblo County are resolved by the District, Municipal, and County Courts.

The Pueblo District Court is the county's trial court, with general jurisdiction over all civil and criminal cases. This court focuses on civil actions involving amounts above $25,000, felonies, juvenile matters, mental health cases, family law, and probate matters. The County Court, due to its limited jurisdiction, handles preliminary hearings for all criminal charges, misdemeanors, civil claims of up to $25,000, small claims in which the amount in dispute is limited to $7,500, traffic cases, and protection orders. The Pueblo Municipal Court deals with violations of city laws committed within city limits. For instance, violations of traffic laws, municipal ordinances, and animal control ordinances are heard in the Municipal Court.

To promote transparency in the legal process, the Pueblo County system provides access to court records. They also publish general caseload statistics to give an overview of court activities. The District Court administers slightly more civil cases than criminal cases, processing between 7,000 and 8,000 cases annually. The County Court does not only administer more cases than the District Court; it also processes a larger volume of civil cases than criminal cases. Annually, the County Court has between 6,000 and 14,000 case dispositions. The Municipal Court, on the other hand, handles approximately 17,000 cases each year. Furthermore, Pueblo County court records are available for inspection in the courthouse. To access them, interested parties may choose to visit the Records Department with a filled-out Record Request Form or contact the courthouse by email at 10JDRequestRecord@judicial.state.co.us. Otherwise through court order, the court records in the following case types are not accessible to the public in Pueblo County:

  • Adoption cases
  • Paternity cases
  • Mental health cases
  • Relinquishment cases
  • Dependency and neglect cases
  • Judicial Bypass cases
  • Juvenile delinquency and truancy cases

The Pueblo County court system demonstrates a clear structure, with each court having its own distinct jurisdiction. The District Court tackles major and complex cases, while the County Court handles less complex cases. The Municipal Court deals with ordinance violations within city limits. Finally, the court system favors a personal approach to obtaining court records.
