Laurens County, Georgia
Centrally located and founded on December 10, 1807, Laurens County was named after Colonel John Laurens. The county is home to the city of Dublin, its largest city and government seat. Laurens County has an estimated population of over 49,400 residents and is part of the 12th Congressional District. Its trial court system consists of a Superior Court, a Juvenile Court, a Probate Court, a Magistrate Court, and Municipal Courts.
Located in Dublin, the Superior Court has general jurisdiction over most civil and all criminal cases. This court handles felony criminal offenses and domestic relations matters such as divorce, child support, child custody, and domestic violence. The Juvenile Court deals with all juvenile matters especially cases involving unruly, deprived, or delinquent children. The Probate Court handles cases involving wills, administration of estates, guardianships, involuntary mental health commitments, and other probate matters. The Magistrate Court has jurisdiction over civil cases with a value of up to $15,000, garnishments, writs of possession, and municipal ordinance violations. The criminal jurisdiction of the Magistrate Court encompasses cases of criminal trespass, marijuana possession, and underage drinking. This court also conducts criminal preliminary hearings.
In 2022, Laurens County recorded a total of 468 incidents of violent and property crimes. Furthermore, the Superior Court had 2,088 case dispositions, while the Magistrate Court had 2,473 case dispositions during the year. The Clerk of Superior Court is responsible for and maintains all court records within Laurens County. The Clerk also grants public access to all interested parties to court records that are not considered to be sealed or confidential. Some examples of confidential court records are adoption, custodial, juvenile, medical, and mental health records as well as any personal identifying information matters.
