Richmond County, Georgia

Established on February 5, 1777, Richmond County was created from a portion of the colonial Parish of St. Paul. It was named for Charles Lennox, the 3rd Duke of Richmond, a British politician. Augusta, the county seat, consolidated governments with Richmond County after the 1995 election and became Augusta-Richmond County. Its county seat is Augusta and Augusta-Richmond county has 206,153 persons living within it as of 2022. The Superior Court, State Court, Juvenile Court, Probate Court, Magistrate Court, Civil Court, and Municipal Courts have several mechanisms in dealing with and solving innumerable disputes from minute to critical issues within their court's jurisdiction.

The Superior Court in Augusta serves Burke and Richmond Counties. It has exclusive jurisdiction over felony cases, annulments, equity cases, and real estate cases such as title to land. It is a court of general jurisdiction. The Superior Court serves as a court of appeal to lower courts in the county and may try civil cases except for probate cases. The State Court has concurrent jurisdiction with the Superior Court over criminal matters. In addition, the State Court tries civil cases except those cases in which exclusive jurisdiction lies with the Superior Court. The Juvenile Court tries juvenile cases and equips young offenders with the ability to live responsibly. The Probate Court appoints guardians and conservators for minors, and incapacitated persons, issues gun permit/firework license, and does safekeeping of wills. Both Civil and Magistrate Courts hear criminal, civil, and traffic cases. All six courts are in Augusta except for the Municipal Courts in Blythe and Hephzibah.

The Judicial Council of Georgia published a report comparing the number of cases filed and disposed per county/courts. In a three year trend from 2020, 2021, and 2022, Richmond County Superior Court in 2022 recorded 7,735 filed cases and 6,232 disposed cases. The State Court had 15,913 filed and 21,249 disposed. The Juvenile Court received 1,217 cases and disposed 1,250 cases all for the year 2022. Comparing these three years, the Superior Court filed on average 6,000 cases yearly, the State Court received 20,000 cases, 14,000 cases yearly were received by the Magistrate Court, and the Juvenile Court received 1,100 cases per year. The Clerk of Superior Court is responsible for safekeeping and creation of court records. The public can look up pleadings, motions, and docket information online on the Georgia Judicial Gateway (GJG) portal. Some Juvenile Court records are not accessible to the public except for child support and juvenile felony proceedings.

About / Additional Info: The Superior Court of the Augusta Judicial Circuit is comprised of Burke and Richmond Counties. The Superior Court is Georgia's only general jurisdiction trial court with exclusive, constitutional authority over felony cases, divorce, equity, and cases regarding title to land. In addition, the Superior Court may try any form of civil or criminal case except probate matters. The Superior Court also corrects errors made by lower courts, but decisions by some lower courts and governmental bodies also can be appealed to Superior Court.
