Neosho County, Kansas

Neosho County is located in southeast Kansas, it was named for the Neosho River which passes through the county. It has a population of over 15,800 people and its county seat is Erie. Neosho County was created on June 3, 1861, and its largest city is Chanute. The District Court and Municipal Court adjudicate cases consistent with the law, the needs of individuals, and the community's values to promote public trust in both the justice system and local government.

The 31st Judicial District Court has two divisions, one in Erie and the other in Chanute. Jury trials are held here and they have general and original jurisdiction over civil and criminal cases. They hear serious criminal offenses, damage suits, domestic violence, small claims, juvenile, conservatorship, and guardianship cases. The Municipal Courts of Neosho County are Chanute Municipal Court, Erie Municipal Court, St. Paul Municipal Court, and Thayer Municipal Court and are located in Chanute, Erie, St. Paul, and Thayer cities respectively. They resolve traffic citation cases and handle lesser offenses, Class D misdemeanors, and municipal ordinance violation cases.

The Kansas judicial branch case management statistics report compared the year 2018 and 2019 caseload in Neosho County, and almost all cases filed in 2019 were disposed of. A total of 3,018 cases were filed and 2,973 were terminated in 2019 while in 2018, there were 3,477 filed cases and 3,292 were disposed. On the average, there are 3,000 cases filed annually. Neosho County is a small county and strives to provide adequate information for its residents regarding its judicial system. Its court system aims to reduce the waiting time for access to court records by providing computer terminals/web-based courthouses where cases can be viewed. Concerned parties also have access to remote judicial proceedings in real-time through the use of electronic audio-visual communication such as Zoom and Webex. The Municipal Court and District Court have developed practical legal methods in resolving all court cases for parties seeking resolution of disputes and general legal matters.
