The Kansas Territorial Legislature created and named the county after the Potawatomi tribe. This happened during its establishment in the year of 1857. The land included used to be part of Riley County. Westmoreland, the county seat, is one of the 17 municipalities encompassed within the county. The District Court serves as the county's highest court of trial, with four Municipal Courts handling judicial matters within their respective localities.

Located in Westmoreland, the Pottawatomie County District Court administers approximately 3,000 cases each fiscal year. This brochure has been prepared to help you understand the Court proceedings and to inform you of your rights and duties. We want every person to leave this Court feeling that he or she has been treated fairly. Municipal Court is the judicial branch of City Government. Traffic violations and violations of City Ordinances are tried in Municipal Court, and upon conviction carry a maximum fine of $2,500 and a possible jail term of up to 1 year. Fines and sentences can be accumulative. Trials are conducted under the Code of Criminal Procedure, Code for Municipal Courts and the Kansas Rules of Evidence as adopted by the Kansas Legislature.
