Pitt County, North Carolina

Pitt County was named in honor of William Pitt the Elder and is located in the inner banks region of North Carolina. Its county seat is Greenville and it is the 14th most populous county in North Carolina. A total of 171,196 people live in Pitt County and the court system comprising the Superior Court and District Court developing various means to build and maintain court-friendly relations between the residents and the court. Thereby assuring the public of a hitch-free process for solving legal issues brought to the court.

The District Court has precedence over misdemeanors and less serious crimes. The judges in the District Court prosecute juvenile matters and infractions. The District Court located in Greenville has a family division adjudicating domestic violence, child support, child custody disputes, divorce, civil claims in which the amount of money involved in controversy is $25,000 or less, and paternity establishment cases as well as issuing orders of protection. In the District Court, a magistrate is in charge of small claims cases and eviction cases, as well as accepting guilty pleas for minor misdemeanors and infractions. The Superior Court decides felonies, cases that are appealed from the District Court, and serious offenses including civil cases that involve damages in the amount of $25,000 or more.

From the North Carolina Judicial Branch Caseload Inventory, the total number of cases disposed between 2021 and 2022 was 3,086 cases, and 2,329 cases between 2022 and 2023 in Pitt County. The number of cases filed in the county between 2022 and 2023 was 413 and 440 respectively between 2021 and 2022. From 2013 to 2020, cases filed were between 2,000 and 3,000 but began decreasing from 2020 till date. The Clerk of the Superior Court has the clerical function of securing and maintaining court records in the county. The public can view paper files for court cases/dockets on the computer terminal at the office of the Clerk of Superior Court or visit the Pitt County Courthouse. In addition, juvenile cases and involuntary hospitalization cases are preserved for confidential reasons.

About / Additional Info: Established in 1777, the superior courts are North Carolina’s oldest courts. Superior courts hear civil and criminal cases. Superior court is divided into five divisions and 48 districts across the state. Every six months, superior court judges rotate among the districts within their divisions. The rotation system is provided for by the state constitution and designed to minimize conflicts of interest that might result from having a permanent judge in one district. Each administrative superior court district has a senior resident superior court judge who manages the administrative duties of the court. 3A Superior court district consists of Pitt county.
