Randolph County, North Carolina

Randolph County was named for Payton Randolph and was formerly inhabited by the Saponi and Keyauwee (Siouan Native Americans). It was formed in 1779 and its county seat is stationed in Asheboro. It has an population estimated at 144,403. Randolph County is located in the center of North Carolina and borders Guilford County, Montgomery County, and Chatham County. A Superior Court and District Court together work towards creating balance in the court system of Randolph County. Both the Superior Court and District Court are located in District 37.

The District Court in Asheboro solves a variety of legal matters. It handles misdemeanors such as theft and traffic violations. It handles civil cases such as small claims and landlord-tenant cases. This court also handles family disputes and other family related cases. The Superior Court presides over felony criminal cases such as drug trafficking and infractions. It also has a Business Court Division that handles complex commercial and corporate disputes. Both the Superior and District Courts oversee civil, criminal, and family cases and also hold jury trials. Felony cases are transferred to the Superior Court for final verdict however.

The North Carolina Judicial Branch Caseload Inventory sets the number of cases filed in Randolph County between 2022-2023 as 1,300 cases and 1,420 as disposed cases while during 2020-2021, 1,301 cases were filed and 1,450 cases were off the caseload. In recent years, Randolph County has recorded a similar number of cases filed per year (1,200). The Clerk of the Superior Court is the designated record keeper of both the District Court and Superior Court records. The public can send a request to search and view court records on the public computer terminals at the office of the Clerk of Superior Court. Members of the public should note that juvenile and expunged records are not at their disposal and deemed private.

Randolph County will continue to experience a positive change in the ways it carries the people along in its judicial processes. About / Additional Info: Established in 1777, the superior courts are North Carolina’s oldest courts. Superior courts hear civil and criminal cases. Superior court is divided into five divisions and 48 districts across the state. Every six months, superior court judges rotate among the districts within their divisions. The rotation system is provided for by the state constitution and designed to minimize conflicts of interest that might result from having a permanent judge in one district. Each administrative superior court district has a senior resident superior court judge who manages the administrative duties of the court. 19B Superior court district consists of Randolph county.
