Gaston County, North Carolina

Located in the southern Piedmont region of North Carolina, Gaston County has a population of over 228,972 residents. From the years 1846 to 1911 the county seat was held in Dallas but now Gaston County's seat and largest community is Gastonia. Named for William Gaston and part of the 10th and 14th Congressional Districts, the county's judicial system is comprehensive, with various courts handling a broad scope of legal matters for the fifteen town and cities that comprise the county.

The Superior Court is Gaston County's highest trial court, and it typically handles the more serious criminal cases and substantial civil cases. These usually include felony cases and civil cases exceeding $25,000; the Superior Court also hears appeals from the District Court. The District Court hears cases involving minor criminal offenses, civil disputes of less than $25,000, juvenile matters, and family law issues, such as divorce, child custody and visitation rights, child and spousal support, property division after divorce, domestic violence, and protective orders. Gaston County also operates specialty programs that aim to provide assistance to certain categories of offenders. These include the Recovery Courts, which offer non-incarceration rehabilitation alternatives to offenders struggling with substance dependency, and the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council, which focuses on ensuring the safety, well-being, and rehabilitation of minors.

As of 2023, Gaston County reported a crime rate of approximately 76.0 per 1,000 residents. The Gaston County Courthouse is located at 325 North Marietta Street, Gastonia, North Carolina, and the county courts handle an estimated 25,000 caseloads annually, including criminal, civil, and traffic cases. Gaston County court records can be accessed by contacting the Court Clerk's office at the county courthouse. It should be pointed out that certain records, such as those involving juveniles or sensitive family matters, as well as all medical and mental health matters are generally considered restricted, sealed, and/or confidential and not accessible to the general public. If access is needed, special permission or court order is required which can be handled by an in person visit with the County Clerk.

The court system in Gaston County ensures the fair and efficient administration of justice. The structure of the county's courts, the District and Superior Courts, provides a clear pathway for addressing both minor and major legal issues. Accessibility to court records is also well-managed, allowing the public to retrieve information while safeguarding sensitive records.
