Shawnee County, Kansas

Created in 1855 as one of the first original counties made by the territorial legislature, Shawnee County was named after one of the indigenous tribes that inhabited the area, the Shawnee Tribe. Its seat and most populous city is Topeka, which is also the state capital. With a population of over 178,600 people, Shawnee is the third-most populous county in Kansas. Its court system consists of a District Court and Municipal Courts. These courts handle a wide variety of cases, including both civil and criminal matters.

The District Court in Shawnee County is located in Topeka. This Court has broad authority to handle cases such as misdemeanors, felonies, divorce, domestic relations, probate, guardianships, conservatorships, mental health cases, matters involving minors, and small claims. About / Additional Info: The Topeka Municipal Court is a court of limited jurisdiction and record which, through its judges and staff, adjudicates traffic infractions and misdemeanor offenses that are alleged to have occurred within the Topeka city limits. All meter parking citations are under the supervision of the City of Topeka Parking Division and are NOT processed in the Municipal Court. Judges, pursuant to applicable provisions of City Ordinance, various state laws and court rules, conduct all hearings – there are no jury trials in Municipal Court.

The Municipal Court Division is responsible for processing and maintaining accurate records of citations, including all traffic violations and other misdemeanor or criminal charges filed by the Shawnee Police Department, Code Enforcement, and any complaints filed by citizens. Services include preparation of complaints, administration of oaths to persons filing complaints and preparation of necessary summons, arrest warrants, and subpoenas.
