Yolo County, California
Yolo County is one of California's original counties located in the northern part of the state. Also included in the Sacramento Valley it was created at the time of statehood in 1850. Yolo County has a land area of 1,013 square miles and an estimated population of over 217,141 residents. Woodland City, the county seat, is also home to the county's single trial court, the Superior Court.
The Yolo County Superior Court has jurisdiction over several kinds of cases, including civil, criminal, family, probate, traffic, and juvenile cases. Common examples of civil cases handled by the court are contract disputes, real estate matters, and torts. Civil claims can be limited or unlimited. Limited claims have a maximum of $35,000, while unlimited claims may exceed $35,000. The Superior Court also hears all felony, misdemeanor, and traffic cases in the county, including those involving minors. Other juvenile matters, such as dependency and child abuse, are also within the jurisdiction of the court. Likewise, family matters that are within the court's authority include divorce, child support, child custody, nullity, and domestic violence. Probate matters include cases of wills, trusts, administration of a deceased estate, guardianships, and conservatorships.
According to reports by the Yolo County Sheriff's Office, over 500 crimes were reported in the county in 2021. Similarly, Statewide Court Statistics reveal that the Yolo County Superior Court resolved a total of 16,376 criminal cases, 2,171 civil cases, 995 family cases, 44 juvenile cases, and 143 probate cases during the 2022 to 2023 fiscal year. The Superior Court maintains records generated in all of its cases, including case files, dockets, pleadings, orders, and judgments. These records are open to members of the public unless they relate to cases that are declared confidential by law, such as adoption, juvenile, and mental health cases. Interested parties can access non-confidential records by filling out the Request for Copies Form and submitting it to the courthouse. Records of the Superior Court are also available online on the Case Search Portal. Access to confidential matters requires special permission from authorized personnel which can be handled at the Clerk's Office.
