The second-most populous county in Missouri, Jackson County is located in the western part of the state and has a population of over 715,500. Its county seat is Independence and Kansas City. Circuit Courts and Municipal Courts make up the trial court system in Jackson County. The main trial court in the county is called the Circuit Court, which has comprehensive authority over all criminal and civil proceedings. Municipal Courts Divisions of the Circuit Court handle municipal ordinance infractions. Municipal cases may be decided by an associate judge of the Circuit Court, or municipalities in the county may have their local Municipal Judge.

The Jackson County Circuit Court is the backbone of the county's court system, handling a wide range of legal matters. These courts are often divided into specialized sections to improve efficiency. One such section is the Associate Circuit Court, which tackles misdemeanors and other minor offenses. For family law matters like divorce, child custody, adoption, and child protection issues, the Family Court Division takes the lead. The county's Circuit Court has a Probate Court Division to oversee matters related to wills, estates, trusts, and guardianships. In addition, there is a Small Claims Court Division offering a simplified process for resolving financial disputes under a set amount, typically $3,000. Finally, the county has several dedicated Municipal Courts, like the Kansas City Municipal Court, which provides a place to obtain a fair and impartial trial on any alleged violation of city ordinance. These Municipal Courts are located all over the county to address violations of local ordinances and traffic laws.

With over 54,190 cases handled annually, the Jackson County court system provides valuable insights into the evolution of the county's legal system. The county is an excellent illustration of the need for a robust judicial system, especially because of its crime rate of 7,577 per 100,000 population. The 16th Circuit Court is in charge of Jackson County's court records, which can be accessed through the court records platform. Note that certain documents like records designed as ‘closed records' are not accessible to the public.

In summary, the Jackson County court system is a vital part of the county government and is committed to upholding justice across the legal system. The county's Circuit Courts and Municipal Courts combine to form a strong legal system that can handle a variety of cases.
