St. Charles County, Missouri, is home to the first American Viticultural Area (AVA), the Augusta AVA. The county, which is one of the fastest growing in Missouri, has its seat in the City of St. Charles. The county covers a land area of 593 square miles and is the state's third-largest county. The county has a population density of 680 per square mile and was recorded to have a total of 406,262 inhabitants as of 2022. The county's court system is made up of a Circuit Court and Municipal Courts.

The St. Charles Circuit Court is located on Second Street, St. Charles. It consists of several Divisions, including Criminal, Circuit Civil, Associate Circuit Civil, Small Claims, Probate, Family, Juvenile, Treatment, and Municipal Divisions. The Civil Court handles civil cases where the damage sought is above $25,000, while the Associate Civil Court handles cases where the damage is below $25,000. When the damage sought is below $5,000, it is handled by the Small Claims Court. The Criminal Court handles all major felonies and misdemeanors in the county.
