Taylor County, Texas

Established in 1858, Taylor County was named in honor of the Taylor brothers, who died at the Battle of the Alamo. The county has a land area of 915.54 square miles and a population of 143,029 people. Abilene is the largest city and county seat. In Taylor County, there are District Courts, County Courts at Law, Justice Courts, and Municipal Courts.

Taylor County's District Courts are organized into four, namely the 42nd, 104th, 326th, and 350th District Courts. Each court has general jurisdiction over all civil and criminal cases, including felony criminal offenses, defamation, election contest cases, divorce, and disputes involving title to land. There are two County Courts at Law located in Abilene. These courts hear misdemeanor proceedings, probate cases, and civil claims with a value of $10,000 or more. The Justice Courts handle preliminary hearings, class C misdemeanors, small claims, and civil cases involving $20,000 or less. Other functions of these courts include administering oaths, issuing search and arrest warrants, and conducting death inquests. Finally, Taylor County has three Municipal Courts located in Abilene, Merkel, and Tye. These courts specialize in class C misdemeanors, traffic violations, and municipal ordinance violations.

There were 3,235 incidents of violent and property crimes recorded in Taylor County as of 2022. The county's courts handle approximately 2000 felony cases and 3,000 misdemeanor cases each year. Each court in Taylor County has a clerk who serves as the official record keeper of the court. The clerk is in charge of docketing, recording, and managing all documents generated from court proceedings. In addition, Taylor County operates an electronic search system that facilitates access to public court records. Interested persons may visit the Court Records Inquiry or re:SearchTX to access records of the District and County Courts. It should be noted that re:SearchTX does not provide access to criminal records or records of the Justice Courts. Case records of other courts are available at the courthouses, and anyone may visit physically to obtain official copies.

Restrictions: The public can only enter the Courthouse through the southwest doors. All other doors are for exiting only, and are closely monitored by deputies of the Taylor County Sheriff's Office, who serve as Courthouse Security.Citizens are not allowed to bring any weapons (including any edged or pointed items) into the courthouse, and are asked to limit the amount of metal they carry so that passing through the metal-detector will be a smooth process.

About / Additional Info: The City of Abilene Municipal Court is a court of non-record. The Abilene Municipal Court conducts adult and teen court hearings and is dedicated to providing to all citizens, other departments and entities a fair independent, and impartial forum for handling fine only cases arising within the City limits of Abilene. The Municipal Court follows the procedures set forth under Texas Law and provides all persons the right to trial by judge or jury. Although every person has the right to be represented by an attorney, most citizens who appear in municipal courts represent themselves.
