Williamson County, Texas

Named after Robert M. Williamson, Williamson County is a county in Texas. It was organized in 1848, covers 1,137 square miles, and has its seat in Georgetown. The county's population estimate is estimated at 617,396. Its court system consists of five trial courts: District Courts, Constitutional County Courts, County Courts, Justice Courts, and Municipal Courts.

Williamson County has six District Courts, all of which are located in Georgetown. These courts exercise original jurisdiction over every type of criminal and civil case. They typically hear cases relating to divorce, election disputes, defamation, etc. They also hear felony cases. Williamson County also has a Constitutional County Court that shares jurisdiction with Justice Courts in civil cases, which are between $200 and $10,000. They also have uncontested jurisdiction over probate cases and, in some cases, handle misdemeanors. The County Courts at Law, also known as Statutory County Courts, are also located in Georgetown. These courts share their jurisdiction with Constitutional County Courts in some types of cases. Justice Courts in the county have restricted jurisdiction over criminal and civil cases. They handle civil cases where the amount in dispute is up to $20,000, traffic misconduct cases, foreclosures of mortgages, etc. The courts are located across different precincts in the county, including in Round Rock, Cedar Park, Georgetown, and Taylor. Lastly, Municipal Courts exercise jurisdiction over certain criminal and civil cases. They handle cases such as ordinance violations, and the civil cases they deal with are mostly limited to the ownership of dangerous dogs.

The crime rate in Williamson County is 20.59 per 1,000 residents, establishing the county as one of the safest places to live in the U.S. Notwithstanding, courts in the county handle a heavy workload of cases annually. For example, the County Courts at Law alone process over 11,000 misdemeanor cases in a year. The office of the County Clerk handles records from all court cases in the county. Members of the public interested in accessing these records can do so by searching the Williamson County Odyssey Portal Website or visiting the county clerk's office to request them in person. Apart from public court records, which are accessible to the public, there are also confidential records that the court restricts from public access. Examples of these confidential records include identifying information about jurors, substance abuse treatment records, child protection records, and so on.

In summary, the judicial government of Williamson County consists of the District Courts, Constitutional County Courts, County Courts, Justice Courts, and Municipal Courts. Records from these courts are always accessible to the public either through the Office of the County Clerk or via the online portal. The role of these courts cannot be understated, as they not only keep law and order but also help to resolve disputes.
