Garvin County, Oklahoma
Garvin County is located in south-central Oklahoma and has a population of over 25,806 residents. The county was created in 1907 and is named after Samuel J. Garvin, a local Chickasaw rancher, merchant, and banker. Its county seat and largest city is Pauls Valley; the county is also served by several courts: District, Small Claims, and Municipal Courts.
Garvin County's District Court is part of the 21st Judicial District of Oklahoma, which also includes Cleveland and McClain Counties, and is the county's main trial court. As such, it has jurisdiction over civil, criminal, probate, family, juvenile, and traffic cases. Examples of cases heard in the District Court include personal injury lawsuits, felony and misdemeanor cases, breach of contract cases, adoptions, divorce proceedings, child support, and juvenile delinquency cases. The District Court also operates a Small Claims Court, which provides a simpler and relatively inexpensive process for resolving disputes involving amounts of $10,000 or less. On the other hand, the Municipal Court handles cases such as minor criminal offenses, traffic violations, and local ordinance infractions. Additionally, the county operates structured specialty programs that focus on the non-incarceration rehabilitation and treatment of certain offenders.
The Garvin County courts oversee a large number of caseloads per year, with the District Court alone handling over 3,000 cases each year. This includes criminal, civil, probate, and family law cases. Crime rates in the county indicate approximately 40.0 criminal incidents per 1000 residents annually, including violent and property crimes, which are relatively lower compared to the national average. Court records in Garvin County are maintained by the Clerks of Court and can be accessed by contacting the appropriate clerk (at the court where the case was handled). Residents can access court records online through the Oklahoma State Courts Network (OSCN). Note that the payment of a fee may be required to obtain copies of these records; registration may also be required to utilize the online court records access portal. Likewise, it is important to note that certain records will be sealed and kept confidential due to the sensitivity of their information. Such records include juvenile court records, medical records, mental health, personal idenitfying information, and cases involving sensitive information, may be restricted from public access.
In summary, Garvin County's court structure comprises a District Court and several Municipal Courts, each with specific responsibilities. These courts uphold the rule of law and ensure justice for all residents of the county.
