Oklahoma County, Oklahoma
Oklahoma County is located in the central region of Oklahoma and is one of the seven counties established in 1980 by the Organic Act. It has a population of over 795,800 people. Its county seat is Oklahoma City, which serves as Oklahoma's largest city and state capital. Numerous municipal and District Courts make up the legal framework of Oklahoma County, and they work efficiently to handle all affairs.
There are two District Courts in Oklahoma City and the third one in the City of Edmond. The District Court comprises the civil, family, juvenile, probate, and criminal divisions. The Civil Division settles disputes over properties and has a small claims unit for amounts in controversy not exceeding $10,000. The District Court holds probation-related hearings, motion hearings, pretrial hearings, preliminary examination hearings, and arraignments, and pronounces sentences on criminals. The Family Division issues a protective order for domestic violence, dissolves a marriage, pronounces a marriage null and void, and presides over spousal support, adoption, child visitation, and child custody cases. Violations of criminal laws by minors under the age of 18 and cases where juveniles are abused or neglected (juvenile dependency) are handled by the Juvenile Division of the District Court. The safekeeping of wills, proper distribution of decedents' estates, and handling of trusts are the duties of the Probate Division, and criminal matters presided over by the Criminal Division. Arcadia, Bethany, Choctaw, Del City, Edmond, Forest Park, Harrah, Jones City, Luther, Midwest City, Nichols Hills, Nicoma Park, Oklahoma City, Spencer, The Village, Valley Brook, and Warr Acres Municipal Courts exert jurisdiction over their various city limits. They hear road traffic, environmental, building, and municipal law violations.
Oklahoma County Court Clerk has the statutory function of filing, recording, and maintaining court documents containing trial transcripts, briefs, pleadings, summons, and motions. On average, Oklahoma County files 120,000 cases during any court year. Records generated during court sessions can be accessed online through the Oklahoma State Courts Network portal. Juvenile records, protective orders, and other sealed records remain confidential and can be disclosed to only the parties in the cases.
Oklahoma County sustains an ultimate objective of ensuring procedural justice is administered in a fair, efficient, and timely manner. The fundamental purpose of the Municipal and District Courts is to provide an impartial forum for citizens, to commit to their duties, and imbibe the principles of due process. The conventional practice of jurisprudence over the years has raised the people's belief in the judiciary system. Therefore, the courthouses have served numerous purposes towards access to court records in the county.
