Guadalupe County, Texas

Guadalupe County, named for the Guadalupe River, was established in 1846 and is home to more than 173,800 people. Seguin serves as the county seat. District Courts, Constitutional County Courts, County Courts at Law, Justice Courts, and Municipal Courts make up the Guadalupe County trial court system. District courts have comprehensive authority over all civil and criminal proceedings. Certain types of actions are limited to the jurisdiction of Constitutional County Courts, County Courts at Law, Justice Courts, and Municipal Courts.

Many different types of civil issues that are outside the purview of subordinate courts are handled by the Guadalupe County District Court. Land ownership issues, lawsuits alleging slander or defamation, certain government actions, and general civil claims with substantial value are all included in this category. In addition, they deal with a variety of probate problems involving wills, trusts, and estates, as well as family affairs like divorce, child custody, and adoption. The two primary subjects that the Guadalupe County Constitutional Court deals with are probate and minor infractions. The county also has a Commissioners Court, which serves as the legislative and executive branches of county government and is in charge of all county departments, including those headed by other elected officials. Guadalupe County Courts at Law handle a wide variety of situations. Misdemeanors, civil lawsuits for $500 to $100,000, and further family and probate problems fall under this category. The court's authority might overlap with that of Constitutional County Courts with certain offenses, health legislation infractions, and workers' compensation cases. Small claims, specific property matters, certain misdemeanors, and minor criminal prosecutions are handled by four Justice Courts in Guadalupe County. Alongside Justice Courts, Municipal Courts handle certain minor criminal cases and enforce city regulations, such as parking tickets and noise offenses.

The over 2,988 cases that the Guadalupe County court system processes each year are a good representation of the county's changing legal landscape. With a crime rate of 1727.3 per 100,000 people, the county is an excellent illustration of the importance of having an effective legal system.
